Oldsmobile Alero 3

I am the owner of a 2002 Alero that I picked up brand new (my first new car, actually!). First with the good: it is a nice looking car that is fairly reliable. Plus you still see enought of them around (even after 5 years of GM not making them) without them being as embarrasingly common as a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla or Chevy Cavalier.

Now for the not so good. My biggest complaint about this car is the brakes are crap. I don't know why, but the car just keeps eating through brakes like there is no tomorrow (this includes 3 brake jobs within the first 50,000 kilometers of ownership). I also find the 4 cylinder engine too noisy and sluggish, as well as way too finicky to turn on. And this may sound trivial, but the driver's side window scratches way too easily when being rolled down & up. Because of this, I've got a multitude of unsightly and just plain ugly scratches all over the driver's side window. Considering the lackluster (and probably far from unique)results I've had with this car, it is no wonder why Oldsmobile didn't survive.

I recently ditched my 98 Neon for a 2001 Alero and let me tell you I couldn't be happier. I test drove the car for 15 minutes and I refused to get back in my Neon to go home. I felt like I cheated myself out of 4 1/2 years when I broke down and bought the Dodge after being a firm GM buyer. I bought the Alero with a little over 25,000 miles on it and I've put on almost 1,000 miles already because I can't keep myself from taking rides in it. I love the way it handles and how comfortable the ride is. And as for miles per gallon, I've hit 29 mph on the highway. Too bad Olds is no longer making cars because it's safe to say, if they were, I'd definitely by another Alero after this one.

I owned a 1999 Allero GL and found the car comfortable on the highway with exceptional power when required with the 3.6 liter engine. A recent accident deployed the air bags and saved me from major injuries. Well engineered car value for the money.

I have owned three Aleros, a 99, an 01 and a 2004. There was a reason I bought 2nd and 3rd ones. It was simply the most car for the money to be found anywhere. Period. It has all the equipment I could want, handles ans stops well, is comfortable on trips and has adequate power to pass and the only xtra (and it wasn't necessary) was a sun and sound system on the 2004.

We bought a 1999 Alero GLS last year. We've put 12,000 miles on it (72,000 total) and haven't had any problems. It's great looking, handles well and goes plenty fast. My only complaints, which are merely personal prefernences, it's not big enough for our family of three, and I hate the leather seats. Overall...nice little car.

Very nice compact, but since Olds is going out of business in 04, its no longer worth any look. Stay away from Olds.

Oldsmobile Alero 4

My 1999 Alero has 62,000 miles on it and I haven't had any problems outside of a routine brake job and a power steering repair (which was under warranty at the time). The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the door seals on the back doors aren't very good and at high speeds I can really hear the wind whipping. I could get it replaced easily enough but it hasn't bothered me enough to do so. Everything else has been perfect, though. The Alero is a great car and I assume that it's only gotten better since 1999.

The Alero is better looking than its Grand Am twin. While I like the styling, the only thing that would stop me from buying an Alero is the fact that Oldsmobile won't be around for much longer. Who wants to own an orphan car, no matter how great it looks? Maybe GM could transfer the Alero over to Saturn once Olds ceases production instead...

I just bought a 2001 GL2 6 cyclinder and thought the gas milage would be better. I now have 6,000 miles on it and the gas milage has not improved. I love the way it drives, the way it looks and am especially impressed with the brake system. I would recommend this car if you don't mind getting 24 mpg or less on the highway.

Just bought the 2001 Alero GL.And so far I really enjoy the car.I had a 1996 Camry before this and I can never say a bad word about the Toyota.I was offered good deal on the Alero and after a test drive I found the car comfortable very peppy and the radio is GREAT.So I bought the car.I have alittle over 700 miles on the car so far and I'm alittle disappointed about the gas mileage I do mostly highway driving and on the 4 cylinder I've gotten only 23 miles per gallon. They say after breakin 1500 miles I should get 30 mpg if I get that I would say that the Alero will be a great car.I do enjoy driving it more than the Camry.

Virtually of the problems with the Alero were corrected by the 2000 model year, as evidenced by the good reliabilty rating given to the Alero by Consumer Reports. I own a new 2001 GL1 V6 Sedan. The powertrain is incredible--very smooth and lots of power and especially torque. Fuel economy has been excellent so far. The 200 watt sound system is top notch, and the handling is crisp and well mannered. Braking is also above average. The rear seat can be a bit tight, but there is plenty of room in the front. This car also looks fantastic.

I own an Alero and although it drives really well, I have had a few problems with it. There was a brake problem that never became a recall (but should have) that required the brakes to be replaced, my horn has never worked quite right, and since it is a new model the parts are always available immediately at my dealer.
