Little Big Man

A 1970 film directed by Arthur Penn and starring Dustin Hoffman. I must admit to having mixed feelings about it, although ultimately I thought well enough of it to award it a "good" rating as opposed to a "fair" one. Hoffman is very good as Jack Crabb, the orphan raised by Indians during the time of the Old West. He's alternately funny, complex, and touching. When the film opens, he's a 121 year old man being interviewed (by character actor William Hickey). The "old man" make up was done by Dick Smith, who also did make up for "The Godfather," "The Exorcist," etc. It holds up really well, in spite of the technological advances that have been made over the ensuing decades. I'll take this over computer generated "special effects" any day of the week. Crabb relives his past, which includes a fateful series of encounters with George Custer. One of my favorite Westerns and it's not Dustin Hoffman or Faye Dunaway but Chief Dan George playing the role of Old Lodge Skins. His dry wit and demeanor in this role, and his role in The Outlaw Josey Wales, that makes the movie for me. It's a pity that he came to acting so late in his life but maybe it wouldn't have worked out for him if he started earlier.

This movie is my all time favorite! It covers all the emotions and is hilarious at times. The acting is great. The scenery is beautiful. The storyline is interesting. What else could you want?

I've loved this movie since I first saw it when I was a tween. Dustin Hoffman is fantastic. The span of history is interesting (but not intended to be historical). And the landscapes and scenery are beautiful. Upon watching it again in my older years, I think it was the "Forrest Gump" of the 70s. Like Forrest Gump, it was not meant to be historical, accurate, and a true-life saga. I do agree that some of it seems "cheesy" now. But, our grandchildren are going to think the same thing about Forrest Gump when they see it a few years from now.

Very interesting twist of the story of George Armstrong Custer and the battle of the Little Big Horn told through the eyes of 130 year old supposed survivor and interesting things that happened to him along the way. Classic....sad and funny at the same time.

Item delivered was exactly as described. Very funny movie. Classic western with great story line.

This has got to be one of the all time greatest movies you'll ever see! Dustin Hoffman is awsome as is Chief Dan George. Great supporting cast and I love the way it goes off into the different lives or situations that Little Big Man experiences throughout his exciting life! Top notch stuff.
