 | irishgit (148) 09/25/2008 | Butterfield was Nixon's deputy assistant from 1969 to 1973. Among his duties was the maintenance of Nixon's historical records, which included the operations of the secret taping system in the White House.
Called before the Senate investigations committee, who had heard rumors of taping, and were routinely asking questions about it, Butterfield was asked by Chief Minority Counsel, Fred Thompson,(yes, the recently unsuccessful GOP presidential candidate) "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the president?" Butterfield acknowledged the that he did, and the subsequent events were crucial to Nixon's downfall.
Butterfield was not involved in either the planning of events or the subsequent coverup. He was not prosecuted, nor should he have been. He left public life in the mid-seventies, becoming a business exectutive.
