Krogh was a lawyer in the firm headed by John Ehrlichman, who joined his boss in the 1968 Nixon campaign and joined the White House staff as liaison to the FBI and the Bureau of Narcotics. His involvement with G. Gordon Liddy began at this point.

Krogh became head of the White House "Plumbers" unit, a group of operatives dedicated to fixing leaks to the media. To many, both at the time and in retrospect Krogh seemed an unusual choice, given his squeaky clean reputation. One associate said that putting him in charge of "a secret police operation was akin to making Frank Merriwell chief executive of a KGB squad."

Krogh approved the break in of Daniel Ellsburg's psychiatrist carried out by Hunt and Liddy, but his involvement with the Plumbers was ended when he refused to authorize a wiretap.

He later pled guilty to charges of conspiring to violate civil rights, and cooperated with prosecutors. He was sentenced to two to six years and was disbarred. He served four months and was readmitted to the bar six years later.

He practiced law in Seattle, and provides services to various clients, primarily in the energy industry. He has also written a book on his personal experience and is a sometime lecturer on legal ethics.

In my opinion, Krogh is one of the least guilty of the "inside" conspirators. While he was involved in fostering the climate of illegality in which the Plumbers operated, he stepped back from it, and well before it became a public issue. His cooperation and testimony did much to reveal the activities of the scandal.
