I used to love that SEGA video game in which Tom Chambers could perform over-the-top dunks, taking flight from all the way behind the three-point stripe. I think that the move just stood out to me because here was this gangly white CGI creation suddenly turning into a moving wall, doing something that the game usually allowed only the black players to do. I wouldn't call him overrated because of that game. Otherwise I would probably have forgotten him and confused him with Rik Smits.

This man was a flat out gunner, and I don't mean that in a particularly flattering sense. He shot every time he touched the ball. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a really interesting piece on basketball stereotypes - what it means to "play black" versus "play white" and came up with all kinds of players that broke the stereotypes. The stereotype of the white player is - not very athletic, but a hard working team player who preferred to pass than shoot. Chambers broke this stereotype as he was ultra athletic, but didn't seem to give a damn about winning games, and man did he chuck it.

He shows up in old clips on a fairly regular basis, yet his name doesn't even get mentioned that often. He was definitely an offensive force, which is enough for him to get the five stars, but I think the reason that he doesn't get mentioned in the greatest power forward discussions is because he wasn't a great rebounder. He averaged 6.1 rpg, and to get into the discussion of all time great power forwards, that really needs to be closer to 10 rpg.

He quietly put up 20,000 points over his career. No big deal...

UPDATE: I find it odd that he's never included in any of the "greatest power forward" discussions...

UPDATE: Here's my nominee for his best highlight...

The listing of the day. 20K plus points from Chambers? That was one quiet NBA career.

Although he was a 4 time All-Star and made the All NBA 2nd team twice, I would agree that he was still highly underrated!

Damn...that was a quiet 20,000 points. Right now he is 36th all time in scoring in the NBA, and was obviously higher when he retired. I remember him as a good player, although he was slightly before my time following the NBA, however I didn't know he was that productive.
