There's already something that allows younger workers to save in a personal account. It's called a 401k (or a Roth IRA).

This idea seemed poorly planned from the outset, so I have to admit I'm glad it was equally poorly executed (as in, it didn't happen). Do we really need a better example of the failure of cattle-call style privatization of government programs than the tragedy that was the Prescription Drug plan?

In light of recent events in our economy, thank goodness this program went nowhere. It would have been disastrous even in a bull market.

i have been for this proposal for some time as i have more faith in the stock market than i do in the federal government's ability to manage social security. i am 44 and will be retiring in about 10 and a half year. i have planned my retirement without counting on social security as a source of income as i am not sure if i will be able to collect it by the time i retire. i support social security as a safety net for older folks who actually need the income, but i will be damned if i am going to subsidize a vacation boom for some baby boomer dripping with cash. let me invest some of that money i am paying in social security taxes to help plan for my retirement!

One of the great disappointments of Bush's time in office was his failure to shore up the Social Security system, which will face problems as the baby boomers begin to collect en masse in the next decade. Bush for his part failed because he got stuck on this idea to invest part of social security in the markets.

Can you imagine if SS funds had been invested in those securities that were backed in large part by sub-prime mortgages? That would have been disasterous for the system and it should give pause to anyone considering support for such schemes.

The idea of allowing me the option to invest my S.S dollar if I want was a great idea. The idea was torpedoed by democrats and the A.A.R.P before it could start... for obvious reasons. The notion that the government is supposed to erase years of peoples fiscal ill responsibility and jack up my taxes so they can blow the money at the casino is laughable.

Social security is the most popular government program in existence. You're probably too young to remember old people eating dog food.

Name me one thing that Bush has tried to do that wasn't torpedoed by the Dems.
