I'm a guy from Massachusetts, United States
About me: 2 years on Rateitall, still live in Mass & approaching age 30. Some say the 30's are the best years of your life...True? Been travelling all over the US & Canada for some time now with plans to start trvaelling overseas pretty soon. Thus, most of my writing content here is about my travels, nothing stimulates me more. Occasionally I'll throw my 2 cents in on politics, pop culture, news stories, but the more I travel the more I'll be writing here.

What a spiteful comment. Any other substance to add besides political bitterness? Let's see Rio is sports crazy, throw's a party like no other, a world class city with unparalleled beaches and scenery, people like you make this site boring.

Are you see serious? This a big reflection of the rateitall community, no offense, but if this lame ass political controversy is at the top of the list for 2009 events, the same old unwavering to left of castro or to the right of Atilla the Hun political mindset found on here, it's little wonder why I don't come around here much anymore

Wow, I step out for a 1/2 an hour and you assume the last word based on your hypothetical queston. I suppose we could go on all night until we are blue in the face. And to appease your point, yes the reverse hypothetical question you present would certainly enrage the gay community, but this is the 21st century.

Today Vermont legislature legalized gay marriage. This is after observation of legal gay marriage in Mass which has shown not to be detrimental to it's citizens and this state also has one of the lowest divorce rates in the country. Legislature or voters approving constitutional rights would be a more ideal situation on which both sides of the argument would agree. But it seems for now, especially in states like Iowa it takes the judicial system, as it has in the past such as interracial marriage to grant constitutional rights to gay and lesbian couples. It might rub you the wrong way, but at the end of the day civil rights cases such as this will not affect you personally. So go ahead and do your victory dance on your hypothetical question, but you will likely see more cases like this in the future, and in the end it won't affect you.

I don't have equal rights in the eyes of the federal goverment under DOMA (Defense of marriage act) and I wish to see that couples who want to marry in 46 other states have the same states rights I have here in Mass. You still haven't answered my question as clearly you are passionate about this, how does gay marriage affect YOU personally, you keep beating this horse.

Also I've yet to see courts take away the contitutional rights of citizens. I guarantee you within a generation this will be a non issue.

It didn't happen that way. All your doing is playing spin doctor. You still get sidetracked on the question, how does gay marriage affect YOU personally? This is the reason why gay couples who want to marry brought these cases to the state supreme courts.

You'll be seeing more cases like this in the future in other states, and I'm sure your life won't be any different because of it. We are taxpayers seeking equal rights, and this seems to be the due process.

the courts are not interfering with YOUR life, so why are you so passionate about something that doesn't affect YOU personally?

Your opinion imposing on my right to marry who I chose is insulting and rediculous and none of your damn business. So I'll say it again, if you don't agree wityh gay marriage, then don't get one. Honestly, how does gay marriage affect your life personally? Is it detremental to you? Thus the reason why we have judges to bypass your jibba jabba.

I live in the state that pioneered gay marriage; Massachusetts. It seems nationally we are viewed as the bleeding liberal, but lets not forget where Mitt Romney came from. Also in 2004 when gay marriage became legal here opponents petitioned for a ballot to put the issue to a vote. They got the 100,000 signatures required but fortunately the current governor and the legislature were able to put a roadblock on it. If gay marriage were to be put on a voters ballot in ANY state, surely it would not pass as clearly stated in California with proposition 8. That being said if civil rights issues regarding race were voted on in the 60's and 70's they would have had an unfortunate outcome then as well. Some people may not like the decisions of supreme court justices deciding on these issues, but that seems to be what it takes. In Vermont the state house and senate passed gay marriage last week yet the Republican governor promises to veto it, the law being passed lies in the hands of one man in Vermont.

Honestly I never thought much about Iowa. I veiwed it as just another heartland state. I've been to Missouri before so I know the character of the people in the heartland is quite nice. No pretentiosness, just friendly and seemingly honest hardworking folk. Iowa first got my attention when Obama won the caucuses in early 2008 which no doubt set the tone for his succesful presidential campaign. I thought, wow they are more progressive than I thought. Gay marriage in Massachusetts and Connecticut seemed almost predictable in those seemingly deep Blue states. I'm pleasantly surprised with the Iowa supreme court decision and I think it sends a message to the rest of the country that many other states can do just the same.

Clearly there are opponents to gay marriage just as they strongly voiced their opinions here in Massachusetts back in 2004. Well the sky hasn't fallen here in Mass, nor has it had any impact on heterosexual marriage by any stretch of the imagination and we are all doing just fine here with legal gay marriage. If you don't believe in gay marriage then don't get one, but don't impose on my civil rights. I'm very proud of Iowa and I view the state and it's people very positively. Way to go Iowa!
