Good review, Abi. It's nice to see thoughtfulness and intelligence is still alive and well on RIA, maybe it's not quite time to pull the plug just yet.

Review Icon ayn reviewed Mother's Day in Holidays:
This seems like a pointless entry since it is unlikely that anybody will read it on this dilapidated site, nevertheless

To all the mothers out there, I wish you a pleasant day.
If you have a close relationship with your mother, I hope that you're at least able to drop her a line today.
If you've lost your mother, I hope that you're able to take a few minutes to think some happy thoughts.

I'll save off reviewing this until some actual facts come in.
Still, all things considered, I am very glad that fatalities are as low as they are.

America needs a boogeyman, just ask any politician.

Depends on who you ask. Either they're three seconds away from turning the U.S. into glass or they're so incompetent they wouldn't recognize a missile if we hand delivered it to them.
I'll split the difference at three stars.

It has only been one day, I'm not ready to write off the man quite yet. He's got a lot of work ahead of him and possibly a lot of opposition as well. I'm willing to give him at least another day before I brand him ineffectual.

Granted. But I'd still say it's pretty significant. The same way it's significant anytime a new leader of any country is elected. The head man in charge tends to make day to day decisions, that, like it or not, affect every day individuals. For example; birth control and abortions. This new guy is probably going to take a hard line against it, as did his predecessor and the pope before him. You can't be Catholic and pro-choice. You just can't. That kind of ideology is too ingrained in their belief systems. If and when he does stand against the pill (for example), a lot of people are going to get pissed off. Your average Catholic will still continue to use contraceptives, but the devout ones won't. When he stands against homosexuality, a lot of homosexuals and those who are sympathetic to their cause will be affected by that stand.
Those are just a few examples. I'd give more but I'm afraid I'm already late meeting a client. I'll have to be long winded and boring another time.

The election of the new pope effects 1.2 billion Catholics world wide. Anything that effects such a large chunk of the world's population is big news. It's way too early to make predictions about anything, but I'm optimistic about the new guy. That he chose the name Francis after the saint from Assisi tells a lot about his character, in my opinion. His past works suggest a man who eschews titles (he reportedly said last year that being a "cardinal is not an award to be bragged about) and spent last night with his people, declining the popes chair. He's theologically conservative, and he may spend quite a bit of time closing a lot of doors that John Paul II opened, but that's just speculation on my part. (God knows John Paul closed enough doors as it is) Bergoglio had previously done a lot to help the poor and I can see nothing but good come of that if he continues. Obviously, it would be of benefit to the poor, but I think it would be of even greater benefit to the church. Many people are disenfranchised by what they see as an outdated and even harmful institution, if they see the head of the Church willing to get his hands dirty, well, nothing but good can come from that. Of course, he has a lot of house to clean too. He has a lot of work ahead of him, I just hope he's up to the task. All the best intentions in the world won't do shit against internal politics and decades worth of bad deeds and secrecy. Some bells you just can't un-ring, all you can do is fix it, prevent it from happening again, and focus on the future.

I guess someone may as well get some use out of it. It's a pretty much dead site by now.
Though I guess if he really wanted to, Lawrence could turn it into a profitable site once more.

I have a feeling that we would sound like a gaggle of 16 year olds trying to sound smart; we think we know everything but we haven't even scratched the surface yet.
