I'm a girl
About me: While I'm not nearly as clever as the real Clever Elsie, I AM fond of random musings and thoughtful conversation. Though a little reserved at first, I have an impulsive silly streak known only to my friends. A bit of a dreamer, I aspire to be poet laureate (well, okay, I'd settle for a 100 grand advance on a novel :)), but for now, I'm just the VP of Staring Out Windows. ;) On an average day, you might find me stirring the creative juices, enticing unsuspecting friends to go skating, defending my dahlias from the diabolical spawn of Bambi, forgetting my Russian to have the fun of relearning it, graciously accepting bribery in the form of truffles, chasing miscellaneous Widgets, nicknaming the world, breathing magic into my corner of it, and, when I have a spare moment, getting better acquainted with the Sand Man. I also won't turn my nose up at books, film, music, TV, photography, art, hiking trails, coffee shops, restaurants, local bars, amusement parks, beaches, mountain views, museums, gardens, theaters, NYC, starry skies, backyard porches, previously unexplored locations, animals of all varieties (except possibly reptilian), and natch, that unbeatable standby, friends & family. :) I look forward to yakking about some of the above topics with all of you here. Oh, and I just opened a Cafe Press shop called Gifts From the Sea with some nauseatingly sappy sunset-on-the-beach photo merchandise, but if you like that sort of thing, check out the link below. I just got it up and running and have very few items available, but lots more are on the way, so stay tuned.

Invasion or rebellion by robots, androids, supercomputers, or other forms of AI has long been a favorite subject of the entertainment industry. However, some of this stuff is right around the corner, as evidenced by this article.

A magical, musical journey through Jim Henson's enchanted maze, this movie was Jennifer Connelly's debut and a trademark role for David Bowie as the feared yet oddly charismatic Goblin King. Beyond the simple moral lessons about family loyalty, fairness, and looking beyond the surface of things, adults have been interested in its more mature themes of sexual awakening, abuse of power, manipulation, rebellion, broken families, and its ambiguous resolution in which the heroine repudiates her childhood fantasies to take on the mantle of adult responsibility.

Review Icon CleverElsie reviewed Pi in Cult Movies:
A brilliant film that examines the fine line between genius and madness in a mathematician searching for a formula that can predict the movement of the stock market. What he discovers reveals more about human greed than he could have imagined. Through stunning dream sequences and a soundtrack with contributions by some of the best techno artists of the late '90s, Aronofsky creates a tense, ambiguous atmosphere that will haunt you as much as his questions about the nature of divinity, consciousness, and the blurring of human and machine.

Anderson was at his best directing this film about arrogant, overachieving nerd Max and his vendetta against his role model-cum-rival, a multimillionaire executive who shows interest in a teacher Max has a crush on. It's completely unrealistic, and Max's one-track mind can be annoying at times, but Schwartzman manages to keep him sympathetic. This was also a pivotal role for Bill Murray, who stretches his acting chops. A quirky movie with some funny (though totally unbelievable) moments.

I never understood what it was about this remake that polarized audiences to the extent that it did. To me, it was just a stylistically unusual melodrama with some humorous musical pastiches and a lot of silly antics. In short, a decent watch for a rainy afternoon but nothing I'd run out and add to my permanent collection. Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to why it stirs such passionate feelings in its supporters and detractors.

Though it may seem cliched now, this was one of the first movies to universalize contemporary teen angst and explore high school stereotypes and the role of peer pressure in maintaining the status quo of social cliques. Unique in that it gives a voice to the challenges faced at every level of the high school hierarchy.

While it's a far cry from the days in which a single woman was the legal property of her father or brothers, singles still face extraordinary social and financial pressures in a society designed for couples. Singles regularly experience discrimination from their employers (longer hours, lower pay), their insurers (higher premiums), the government (higher taxes), and retailers (package deals that only apply to marital partners), as well as their own friends and family, who often exclude them, deride them, or needle them. After a certain age, singles are often the butt of remarks implying that they've failed in life or are somehow defective. They are truly the "invisible majority" in our country.

Americans have a love/hate relationship with sex. It's ubiquitous and ubiquitously repressed, reviled, shamed, and snickered about. Considering the aggressiveness with which some Americans have fought sex education, reproductive choices for women (and, no, I'm not just referring to abortions here but even simple contraception like the pill), and mere glimpses of nudity on TV, the war on sex seems to have displaced the war on drugs and the war on terror.

Never considered this a cult classic, either, as much as a popular romance movie from the Swayze heyday.  A feel-good dance movie with a traditional rich girl-poor boy plot.  Fun to watch but nothing spectacular.

An ambitious but misguided attempt to make Shakespeare relevant to a contemporary audience.  Although I have to admit that I was somewhat surprised by DiCaprio's acting ability, the movie nonetheless failed to move me to catharsis.  In fact, it left me cold.  Maybe it was the clash of surrealist cinematography with the hyper-real Cali drug ring underworld, but I just wasn't feeling it.  The overall effect was silly and flat.
