 | kidicarus333 (8) 09/12/2008 | If his very smart campaign is any indication of what kind of president he will be, we are going to be in good shape. The alternative is just too frightening; basically four more years of Bush if McCain somehow gets elected. I don't care how you want to spin it, you can't tell me that is not the case. Barack Obama is our only chance to gain a little bit of self-respect back world-wide.

 | Drummond (60) 08/20/2008 | Obama is about as conservative as Clinton on most points, and I'm a little concerned about his pandering to the religious set with "family values" rhetoric. He's voted for the Patriot Act. And his new "I'm the liberal Reagan" schtick is grandiose and annoying, to say the least of whitewashing the teflon corruption of the 1980s decade with the comparison (yes, I know he wasn't talking policy). He wants to be Kennedy and Reagan. He doesn't want to be Nixon or Clinton. I'm concerned he'll be Carter and Ford.
He talks in generalizations, with very little in terms of real plans. His positions on a number of issues are stealth in nature and I'm concerned that his resistance to being pinned down to specific policy positions will amount to a Clintonian mush which does nobody any good. The "politics of consensus" to me evokes images of a decade ago with a presidency trying to be something for everybody.
But he has taken specific positions on some key issues. He's opposed the Iraq war from the beginning. He was the first senator to introduce a bill calling for specific timing pullouts, and had it passed with veto overridden the troops would be out three months from now. Perhaps he introduced it as a posture knowing it wouldn't be passed, but it framed the discussion positively. He also wants to up the current income cap of 97 grand for social security taxes. And he wants to let the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy die in order to enact the first ever tax cuts aimed at the lower income.
But mostly I support him because of the excitement he's generating with progressive youth - something I've never seen in my lifetime. Something which hasn't been seen in this country since Kennedy. Couched in his vague rhetoric is the proposition long lost in this country that organizing around government can make a difference. His invocation of Reagan's transformative movement was not about Reagan's policies, but specifically he is calling for a paradigm shift that rolls back the cynicism about government (due to the "excesses") which accompanied the "Reagan Revolution." In other words, an Obama election is more than a defeat for conservatism. It would represent a liberal revival. In a way his campaign is more radical than Edwards despite the centrist positions he takes on social issues and his flirtations with DLC and Blue Dog types. What is missing in the other campaigns, even those of Edwards and Kucinich, is the optimism for social change in the following.
Lastly, his election could signify the restoration of the notion that learning and intelligence are virtues rather than vices, and maybe bury at least for the moment the "plain talking" anti-intellectualism which has governed political images for the past couple of decades. He's smart and not ashamed of it. He speaks in complete sentences. He pronounces words correctly and uses them properly. He has wit and a sense of irony. He has depth. And he will trounce any of the Republicans he faces. I'm not sure he can get by the decades evolving Clinton machine. But he'll have my vote.

 | hardrockfanatic (7) 08/11/2008 | His speaking skills are second to none but has anyone actually taken the time to see his voting record? Yeah that still matters. His record is nothing to brag about and he still doesn't actually talk that much about policy and how to get things done. That should be important to the voter but apparently people dislike Bush so much they will vote for the other side, even if he or she doesn't stand for anything. Let's just say it can always get worse.

I simply don't think he has the experience and this country is in for a rude awakening. I checked his voting record and let's just say he doesn't exactly represent my ideals. Before you vote for him or McCain, I ask you to do your research, you may be surprised at what you find.

Which really means raise taxes on the middle class and give to the lazy people who will not work and take care of themselves. No real agenda, very limited experience. The Reagan Dems will flee the party again and not vote for him. McCain will blow him out of the water in November.

 | Vudija (98) 02/17/2008 | I'll agree that he seems like a decent guy, great speaker and such...but...as far as his political experience is concerned; I don't think he has what it takes, at his level, to take on a country...especially not ours. Maybe when he's a bit more savvy, bit more experienced, and can answer questions without worrying about his popularity with EVERYONE; he'll be better suited.

 | Wiseguy (52) 02/17/2008 | Thanks to the media, the liberals wet dream has reached its climax.
News reporters are captivated with him, he enters arenas thru clouds of
smoke, reminiscent of wrestlers at W.W.E events, and we say rednecks
are dumb. Woman at his rallies are fainting, the drama of the EMT's
rushing in to cart them off as Obama looks on in concern, Hollywood
couldn't have done a better job producing this. This is populism at
it's height, and Obama is hoping that his message of ??? will continue to rouse the emotions of the ignorant. Will it win
the day?...It just might.

 | Strijdom (8) 02/10/2008 | Obama is a media creation, built from hot air bubbles. I had to research for 2 hours to see his stance on major issues such as the "dont ask dont tell" policy, and I still have no answers. He's mum on these issues just to prevent from alienating voters. In terms of being the stereotypical politician, Obama is the best. Even better than Bush or Rove. Listen to any debate. He evades everything and anything on important issues. It's very scary to have a big question mark become president.

No experience whatsoever to run the United States. Let's face it, a country like the U.S. is extremely complex and I don't want a political child running it. You don't elect someone president because he is nice...well, I guess some do.

 | SuKingsANDKnights300 (17) 01/07/2008 | OK. America calm down!...calm down!...calm down everybody. We know how politics runs in the west. We study it, in books and in practical industry. We know the content of this current contention very well. I know American political pundits of Washington to the inner cored content. We know who is qualified for grant nomination. Of course there are many nominees, but we select few to the contention in november. Alright let's see here. Obama has surmounted the greatest challenge. Following the speech yesterday afternoon, suggests that he is legitimately capable of leading his nation. We don't any more want wolves wearing sheep skins. We don't need hypocrisy on the war on terror, and it's negative phrases. We don't need America to leave under illusions, and be blind folded. The status quo is an apparent clear-cut. In New Hampshire, if they don't run with a positive relevant vision of America, there is a potential failure of each every candidate. I want to be a realist here, in this politics. Obama is now a man America has been waiting for. No more survivalism, and no more irrecusable of one man's decision. No more mess up, and confusion in foreign policy deal. We know very well who is the best guy to lead in the USA, and it's someone like Obama. The current administration politics are very naive, and had already counter-blotted out, and we know what is their nature, and we know where they are leading to? They do not reflect the interest of America, and the world at all meanings, instead they are leading to failure, but we need this guy here to reverse them ,and use them efficiently . Bingo!...we caught them..(Washingtonists at the white house now), and we will continue to tackle them with critical thinkerism. Vote OBAMA!!

 | James76255 (26) 01/05/2008 | I suppose he could lead the way to not making decisions as he has made very few in his short time in the Senate.
He's an outstanding speaker, there's no doubt about that. He has a way of capturing your attention and listening to him. Unfortunately if you actually pay attention he's one of those dynamic speakers that talks and talks but never actually says anything. He speaks in slogans and bumper stickers but never offers anything but a chicken in every pot type rhetoric. Plus the whole "I have foriegn policy experience because I lived somewhere before I hit puberty" keeps sticking with me. By the way, how is this guy a centrist? Check the voting record. When he has bothered to actually cast a vote, it looks pretty damn liberal to me.
Anyway, when all is said and done, if he gets through without ruining what might have been a great chance to be elected in later years, I guess that will be something.

 | magellan (177) 12/17/2007 | Obama is surging a bit right now. His supporters are far more passionate than Clinton's (who seem more resigned to Clinton's inevitability than in love with her as a candidate), and we shouldn't underestimate the impact of having Oprah endorsing his campaign. While Hillary comes off as opportunistic and mean, Obama seems to genuinely inspire people. Whether this is enough to overcome his lack of experience to bring home the Democratic nomination remains to be seen.
I believe that the winner of the Democratic nomination will (deservedly) be our next President. After the spending, and torture, and incompetence, and war, and corruption of the current administration, my sense is that a functioning democracy such as ours will decide to give the other party a chance.
