The Grass Roots
A fabulous top 40 singles group from the 60s and early 70s. This type of artist has always been overlooked ...

Sun Oct 20 2013Let us pose an ethical question shall we? Is it wrong for us to want to see the Grass Roots inducted into the Hall of Fame, just so we can see an acceptance speech from their former bass player, Creed Bratton (of the Office)? Maybe it isn’t the worst reason to want to see a band inducted, though we are sure that there are many fans of the Grass Roots who would prefer to induct them based on their love of their melodic Pop offerings in the 60’s and 70’s. After a bizarre start (Their origin was a couple of minor hits created by a pair of producers until an existing band was hired to take over), the Grass Roots were constant listening on AM radio. Their Folksy blend of AM Pop proved to be a successful formula as they had a large series of hits from 1967 to 1973. Despite their success, and the subtly textured music they had, they received a bubblegum image that seemed a little harsh and one that they have yet to completely shake. This could be the primary reason that the Grass Roots ha... Read more

Mon Sep 02 2013I see both sides to this argument. If other 60s pop oldies radio staples like The Mamas and The Papas and The Lovin Spoonful have been bestowed the honor of admission into this grand Hall Of Fame (Shame?) then why can't this honor also be given to other groups from this same era whose songs have stood the test of time and still can be heard on 60s oldies radio-like The Grass Roots, The Association, and The Turtles? I also understand that if the true criteria of admission must include considerable innovation/influence, then groups like The Grass Roots, The Lovin Spoonful, and The Mamas And The Papas should NOT be admitted. But since The Mamas And the Papas and The Lovin Spoonful ARE already admitted, can you blame fans of The Grass Roots and other similar bands for feeling snubbed if their bands aren't inducted? This highlights the central shortcoming of this type of ultimately subjective Hall Of Fame organization. When 1 band is admitted and another band of similar pedigree is excl... Read more

Mon Sep 03 2012Lacked a frontman with the carissma of a Jagger or Morrison to make them more than simple hitmakers.. Nor did they write like Lennon or Wilson to define their voice but The Grass Roots did chart with dozens of top shelf hits, many with first rate vocals, slick and stylistic playing, and sharp lyrics. with so many more worry rock and roll bands ahead, unlikely to get it.

Tue May 13 2008From 1967-1972, one of the most consistent singles track records in terms of songwriting quality EVER - only Three Dog Night rivals them....to wit: "Let's Live For Today", "Things I Should've Said", "Midnight Confessions", "I'd Wait A Million Years", "Heaven Knows", "Temptation Eyes", "Sooner Or Later", "Two Divided By Love".....the songs speak better for themselves than I ever could!

Sun Apr 20 2008Sorry. They were only one step above bubble gum. If consideration for the HOF was determined only by formulaic hit songs, they'd be shoe-ins. That said, I did like "Where Were You When I Needed You?" On further thought, I decided to give them an extra star. If I can give Jay and the Americans and The Monkees 3 stars, the the Grass Roots are certainly at, or above, their quality.

Mon Nov 06 2006I've got 4 songs on my ipod from The Grass Roots: Midnight Confession Live For Today Sooner or Later Temptation Eyes There's not too many artists or groups that have more than 4 songs on my ipod - so I'm giving them a high rating.

Sun Sep 10 2006A constant mainstay, day-in-day-out, always got one on the charts, near the top of the top 40, in the trenches type group. This at a time, (1966 to 1972), when the greatest groups/singers of the entire RR age comprised the Root's competition. No one super unforgetable tune here...just one immediatly recognizable, footstomp'en hit after another....RRHOF voters, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN, ROB AND THE ROOTS, NEEDED YOU??
