Sat Aug 24 2013When you think “Joy to the World,” you should be thinking of this band’s song (and you better be listening to your mama when she tells you not to go to that party).

Fri Mar 08 2013Another group who did not write their songs yet dominated the charts in their time. No one sold more than Three dog Night when they were on top. This to mee, was a first time deserving group.

Mon Jan 21 2013In the 50's and early 60's vocal harmony groups were a revered part of rock but by the late 60's and 70's they were often pushed to the side as the guitar began to take a more prominent role in rock's image. White vocal groups in particular were seen as too "pop" by many and Three Dog Night was the most popular among them. That they notched over 20 hits, eleven of which made the Top Ten, would usually be enough for consideration at least, but the style in which they are remembered doesn't make it likely they'll ever be nominated.

Fri Nov 23 2012had more hits than Pete Rose but many of them were bloop singles

Mon Nov 12 2012Some of this is dreck

Tue Jul 03 2012I like them well enough although for every classic single there a groaner or two to match. Having a trio of vocalists separated them from other on-demensional acts. Easy to be hard, as they say.

Tue Nov 29 2011Three Dog Night is an American rock band best known for their music from 1968 to 1975. During that time the band charted 21 Billboard top 40 hits in America, three of which reached Number One. As of 2011, they are still recording and making live appearances. Three Dog Night was inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000. SuccessThree Dog Night earned 13 gold albums and recorded 21 Billboard Top 40 hits, seven of which went gold. Their first gold record was "One" (US #5), which had been written and recorded by Harry Nilsson. The group had three US #1 songs: "Mama Told Me Not to Come" (Cory Wells on lead), which was also their only Top 10 hit in the UK; "Joy to the World" (Chuck Negron on lead); and "Black and White" (Danny Hutton on lead). Dunhill Records claimed 40 million record albums were sold by the band during this time period. [edit] CoversAs its members wrote just a handful of songs on the albums, most songs Three Dog Night recorded were written by outside songwriters... Read more

Sun Nov 28 2010I see no reason why not. It seemed as if they were all you heard from 1968 to 1974. Terrific vocals and harmonies from Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells and a great backup band with bassist Joe Schermie, drummer Floyd Sneed, guitarist Mike Allsup and keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon, to name a few. "Mama Told Me Not To Come," "One," "Liar," "Easy To Be Hard," "The Show Must Go On," "Try A Little Tenderness," "Black And White," "Shambala," "Never Been To Spain," "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song," "Celebrate" and finally, their biggest hit "Joy To The World." Speaking of the song "Celebrate," I think we'll be celebrating when the Dogs get their due!

Mon Oct 25 2010Sure, put them in. Hell, put everyone who ever picked up a guitar in. The Hall of Fame has never been anything but a tawdry commercial joke, and these guys would be a perfect fit. The only thing more ridiculous than the Hall of Fame itself are the nitwits who argue about it as though it had any importance at all.

Tue Sep 28 2010Of Course they should be in the hall of fame. People spout off and don't even know what they are talking about. There are so many mediocre acts in already. Three Dog Night was arguably the most succesful band in the world for a few years, they were huge. And they sold more records than official figures indicate, they were saturation on radio and in sales for years. Allow me to dispute a few points some knucklehead made in another post. First of all, Chuck and Cory are superb singers, even now, and I would say as good as any rock crooners of their era Nilsson, McCartney, David Clayton Thomas, whoever Second the idea of three lead singers equal in the mix with the harmony or unison notes was highly innovative. Third they had great ears for material, Fourth they could too write songs,, Both Danny Hutton and Michael Allsup are very accomplished songwriters as was Joe Schermie... and sometimes Chuck and even Greenspoon, just because The Dogs didint write a lot of their material doe... Fri Nov 13 2009Annoying enough.

Fri Aug 21 2009Although I lost interest in them when "Joy to the World" was released, their string of hits more than qualifies them for the HOF.

Sun May 31 2009not taken as seriously as some band but have the track record of success to warrent induction at some point. Great singles band, Mama.
by devasic1
Thu Apr 23 2009They had a lot of hits sure, but they didnt write any of them, nor did those hits influence many acts. Two knocks against them for getting in!

Sun Mar 22 2009good band, but others must go in first, more hits than inspiration and innovation...

Tue Jul 29 2008How can you leave out the most listened to group of the early 70's? Three Dog Night WAS the early 70's!! Look how many great artists and songwriters they brought to the forefront of the music community: Elton John (then Reggie Dwight), Randy Newman, Laura Niero, Paul Williams, Hoyt Axton....and so many others. They made so many classic songs--songs we now hear on commercials, they did so well! PUT 3 Dog Night IN the HALL OF FAME!!

Sun Mar 30 2008How can they not be in?
by frankswildyear_s
Wed Mar 05 2008Most of the arguments for their induction are based on their incredible chart performance over a brief period. By that rationale, the Spice Girls are a lock for induction in about 2019.They were a fine band of journeymen players and singers who made a lot of dough for their record company, professional songwriters, promoters, agents and managers and by all accounts they lived the rock and roll high life while they were on top. But their story is music business triumph as much as it is an artistic one. The same collaboration of commercial and musical accumen will succeed in producing similar results time and time again. That's not the stuff of Hall of Famers.

Wed Mar 05 2008Top-selling band in the early 1970s. A no-brainer!

Fri May 25 2007A travesty that this group is not already in.

Sat Jan 27 2007There should probably be a wing at the Hall that honors inconsequential acts that put out great singles. TDN, the Buckinghams, the Hollies, the Turtles, Hall & Oates, Bananarama, the GO-Gos, etc
by bear_duncan
Wed Nov 15 2006Lots of top 40 hits, Live at The Forum is still on of my favorites to listen to. Songs may be a little dated but still fun to hear. Many more deserving bands out there at this time.
by sungold
Tue Sep 05 2006Their sound, which dominated the radio during the late 60s & early 70s, has not been duplicated. They definitely deserve to be in the Hall. Come on, folks!

Sat Sep 02 2006Have been shamefully overlooked by the Hall of Fame for years.

Thu Mar 16 2006great band, great vocals. let them in

Tue Mar 14 2006The greatest cover band ever. If you listen to the deep cuts on their albums you find that they really new how to rock also.
by cjmdrums
Sun Mar 05 2006How can you leave out a band that had as many top 10 hits as this band? So what if they didn't write their own material.
by urethramiacin
Wed Dec 28 2005No one was more successful from '69-74.
by candy_kane
Mon Nov 07 2005Apparently penalized for not writing their hits (while r & b acts aren't). Their string of hits from 1969-74 was amazing.

Thu Jul 14 2005A lot of catchy hits but I dont think so.

Fri May 06 2005I don't think so

Wed Apr 27 2005They were the most successful cover band--they rarely wrote their songs (at least the big hits). A solid rock/pop band for the early '70s, but Bread wrote more original material. Do I see a show of hands to induct Bread?

Wed Apr 20 2005JOY TO THE WORLD what a great song!

Tue Apr 19 2005Great music deserves a reward, right? Wrong this time. I'd like to see them inducted but the powers that be will look the other way...
