Sun Oct 20 2013You might not immediately recognize the name Jeff Lynn, but you've easily heard many of his songs many, many times. As far as melody and arrangements, he rivals some of the greatest and most successful songwriters of all time like Lennon and McCartney and the Bee Gees. And actually, he is one of the greatest and most successful songwriters of all time. For the uninitiated, Jeff Lynn was the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist for 70s pop/rock powerhouse Electric Light Orchestra ("ELO"). ELO had numerous rock classic staples like" Evil Woman," "Sweet Talkin' Woman," "Turn to Stone," and the happiest song ever written Mr. Blue Sky Before his death, John Lennon was quoted as saying (in a complimentary fashion) that if The Beatles had kept making music they probably would have sounded a lot like ELO. Arguably, ELO's success should have been enough to put Jeff in the Hall, but just in case there was any doubt, he spent the rest of his career producing and writing some huge highlights in... Sat Aug 24 2013This symphonic, supersonic band lives up to their psychedelic name with songs like “Strange Magic.”

Wed Aug 21 2013From the mid 70-s to the mid 80′s this orchestrated rock fusion band had the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits of any band in US chart history, and influenced many artists.

Sun May 19 2013The must be inducted member is Jeff Lynne, thanks to his work with The Move and The Traveling Wilburys, his success as a songwriter and his accomplishments as a producer. But since the R&R Hall of Fame has ignored him thus far and seems to have an aversion toward progressive rock groups, let’s go for Lynne’s crowning achievement – ELO, one of the most accomplished and popular groups of the ’70s and early ’80s. Trendsetters, with a full-time, three-member string section, ELO dominated the radio waves and best-seller charts from 1972 until 1986, with five of their LPs and seven singles reaching the Top 10.

Tue Jul 03 2012Not everyone's cup of tea. Jeff Lynne did take what he learned from Chuck berry and George Martin and created a unique sound in the 1970's.

Thu Aug 04 2011To incorporate strings as part of the band was not only innovative, it worked!

Mon Oct 04 2010Jeff Lynne is undoubtedly one of the greatest songwriters of all time. ELO is a wonderful and underrated band. Out of the Blue, El Dorado, and Time are great albums. Just listen to the full albums to hear how orchestral and masterful they are.

Tue Jul 13 2010Are you kidding, how about Jeff Lynne just alone on his production of the Beatles, Traveling Wilburys, etc...

Sun May 02 2010Well roll over Beethoven another classic rock band snubbed by the HOF. Imagine that! Just becasue they weren't very popular in the UK didn't mean that they wouldn't find their niche in the US. After all, it turned out ok for the Beatles didn't it? I'm beginning to wonder if the review committee for the HOF has potatoes growing out of their ears and f-ing crap for brains!

Fri Mar 05 2010ELO was a more pop continuation of the psychedellic prog band the Move. There's less of a chance for the Move to get inducted than ELO,since they were more of a hit in the UK. However, both bands featured powerhouse Bev Beavan on drums, Roy Wood on the 1st 2 albums before he left to form Wizzard and of course, the genius of Jeff Lynne. Early days included Beatlesque "Ma Ma Ma Belle," the symphonic rendition of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" (with snippets of Beethoven's 5th), the melancholy "Can't Get It Out Of My Head," the sinister pop of "Evil Woman" and the intriguing instrumental "Fire On High"- "Kcab nrut! Kcab nrut!" A New World's Record featured "Living Thing" with its screaching violins and the remake of the Move's "Do Ya." Out Of The Blue featured "Mr. Blue Sky" which started out pop and ended symphonic and "Sweet Talking Woman." They turned to funk on "Shine A Little Love" (and it seemed to work for them) and then there was the 1950's style doo-whop of "Don't Bring Me D... Read more

Thu Dec 24 2009Like any artist (for the most part), you either like the music they produce or you don't. ELO is a little over the top as far as the production goes (vocal layering, echoing, synth voices, etc), but I love the rich harmonies and bombastic sound Jeff Lynne produced on their best albums. It's music gluttony that I love much like eating a rich dessert!

Tue Dec 15 2009Even though the Rock n Roll hall of fame is not a benchmark by any standard, ELO, should be inducted on a number of points. 1- Jeff Lynne has written more than enough quality music to prove himself as one of the better song writers of all time.See the partial list below. 2- Jeff Lynne has set a consistantly high standard in production, refer to George Harrison, Beatles, Paul McCartney, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Regina Spektor and Del Shannon to name a few. Also on the basis that he is still producing. 3- ELO sold masses of records worldwide. They are in the top 100 of all time sales. 4-The music they produced (with exception of some after 1978). Was cutting edge, crafty and popular not just commercially but also in terms of quality. 5- Not many people had better afros!

Thu Apr 23 2009They had a lot of hits and helped advance production techniques during the 70s. Plus people love Jeff Lynn. Still others are more deserving of getting in before them like Alice Cooper and the Moody Blues!

Thu Jan 15 2009The Electric Light Orchestra were one of the most experimental rock bands of the 70s into the 80s, mixing symphony and classical with mainstream rock. Jeff Lynne was a genius in every sense of the word and it is a shame they have been totally overlooked.

Mon Aug 18 2008ELO were one of the most innovative and original bands. They incorporated strings into a rock/pop concept, also live on stage. But what many people are not aware of is that ELO were innovative in many ways. Some of the studio tricks Lynne used to create his sound were unbelievable. Lynne carried the technique of multitracking to an extreme. Listen attentively to these painstakingly constructed backing tracks. There are so many sounds and little tricks buried in the mix. This is probably why people like Dave Edmunds call him the most amazing thing they have ever seen in the studio. Moreover, ELO invented a unique crystal clear ambient sound. With surround mixes becoming more and more fashionable, it can be said that Lynne was way ahead of his time, given his obsession with the techniques of distant micing. Another thing is that ELO experimented a lot with keyboard technology. So you could just as well say that they invented keyboard-based space pop which became the latest trend in the ea... Read more

Thu Nov 01 2007ELO/ Jeff Lynne's music speaks to me. I am floored by sheer number of beautiflul songs and melodies he has created. he should have been a Beatle. It is an outrage for them not to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It makes that whole organization irrelevent as far as i'm concerned.

Wed Jun 27 2007Jeff Lynne is a musical genius who brought symphonic sound to rock and roll which helped bring about the advent of using synthesizers to imitate the sound. His production abilities just solidify his genius. In order for you to thoroughly understand it all you have to do more than just listen to the words of the songs and to the music of all the instruments together. Listen to the songs over and over and break the music down by instruments. He left nothing to add, piecing the right instrument at the right time. In my opinion Jeff Lynne is the closest thing to Mozart that our modern world will ever see. If you dont get it you're not listening to the music. His music doesnt need a message, it is the message.

Sat Jun 23 2007They were my favorite group when I was a kid and I still love the pre-Discovery stuff. That said, they not close to Hall-worthy. Late 70's era AOR didn't age well at all. If you weren't born between the mid-50s to mid-60s they're probably completely irrelevant to you

Tue Feb 20 2007I have been enjoying music from the electic light orchestra for over three decades. I have introduced a number of people to the group and I have found that not everyone is into their sound. Hey, we all have different tastes. But for those people that enjoy harmonies, catchy tunes, or well and sometimes over produced songs, the music won them over. I'm one of them. Jeff Lynne's ability to write enjoyable pop tunes didn't stop at one or two single releases, but throughout whole albums. Did their music have a message? Not usually. Did their music change the world? Not many have. They just created wonderful music. And for most people like finding a diamond on the street their songs await to be discovered.

Tue Feb 20 2007Great band ! I put them right up there with the Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and the Who. Jeff Lynne is a master musician. His only downfall was disowning the rest of the group. As for people that shun or or put down their music, you need to listen to it, not just hear one song and condemn it.

Fri Nov 17 200670s novelty act that now sound incredibly dated. What is their legacy exactly? Frankly the reasons given here justifying their inclusion in the RRHOF are all a bit lame.

Tue Sep 19 2006Amazingly underrated. I'm tired of the Beatles comparison. JL took that influence and turned it into his own. Hmmm, has no other band ever been influenced by another artist? Give me a break.

Sun Aug 06 2006One of the best pop bands of the late 70s/early 80s. Major influence on other bands and individuals. Jeff Lynne was, and still is, a musical genius.

Mon Mar 13 2006ELO brought a classical sound to the masses in the late 70s as the curse of disco was rising. They also had a different sound then any other band of the time and since ELO is unique which is some that is lacking by many of the other artists listed here.

Tue Jan 31 2006You mean they're NOT in the R&RHOF; already? They should be inducted for "A New World Record" alone! Jeff Lynne Rules
by uardllog
Mon Jan 30 2006the day roy wood left the band, they started slipping fast. First four albums were very good but by the time 'A new world record' came along they were just trans-atlantic synth pop/rock, with a very annopying predictability about their music. Rockn roll hall of fame is irrelavent toss anyway,
