Sat Oct 04 2014.From Surf City to Pasadena to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Most associated with surf music, Jan Berry also had a tremendous impact on the importance of the bass vocal in doowop, and, consequently, on the bass lines used by Mike Love in the Beach Boys. . For Jan & Dean, there’s one last ride to take – into the Hall of Fame

Sat Jan 25 2014For years now Jan (Berry) & Dean (Torrence) fans have expectedly watched for the duos name to show up on the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee list. Yet, almost nine years after Jan Berry’s passing they still wait. Considering that Jan & Dean have over 30 songs that charted (six that were Top Ten singles) you would think they would have found their way into the hall’s elite by now. As it is, the duo has not been selected yet, and no one is sure as to why. One belief is that Jan and Dean’s rebellious attitude towards the music industry in the 1960’s hurt any chances of them being selected for inclusion into the hall.

One belief is that Jan and Dean’s rebellious attitude towards the music industry in the 1960’s hurt any chances of them being selected for inclusion into the hall. When asked about the absence in the historic building, Dean Torrence had this to say: Jan was the first guy to hand pick and put together [what’s referred to as] the Wrecking Crew. Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Tommy Tedesco, Bill Pitman, Glen Campbell, Billy Strange, Ray Pohlman, Jimmy Bond, Leon Russell, Jay Migliori, Steve Douglas, Roy Katon and Tom Scott were all from di... Sat Aug 31 2013At allmusic.com, Bruce Eder noted, “Jan & Dean’s success as singles artists during this period tends to obscure the virtues of their LPs. Beginning with the ‘Drag City’ album, in particular — which was their first LP of all original material — their albums showed a level of care and sophistication in the production and the selection of tracks that was unusual, if not extraordinary, for most rock & roll LPs in 1963. The duo’s music grew in complexity in 1964, Berry attempting ever more daring productions behind their songs — it was seldom cited by historians or critics for this virtue, but the single “Dead Man’s Curve,” recorded after the version that appeared on ‘Drag City’, involved 18 separate vocal parts. Their recordings of ‘Sidewalk Surfin” and ‘Ride the Wild Surf’ were also exceptionally ambitious, b - See more at: http://www.goldminemag.com/blogs/from-surf-city-to-pasadena-to-rock-roll-hall-of-fame#sthash.wwo5INGG.dpuf

Fri Aug 09 2013The sixty ninth selection is a band synonymous with early 60’s surf music. Jan & Dean was certainly a key part of that scene, though they always seemed to be in the shadow of the Beach Boys. To many, surf music was mostly fun, but lacking any real depth

Sun Feb 10 2013A duo that is easy to underrate because their on-record attitudes were so carefree and jokey at times that it masked how musically innovative they were, particularly Jan Berry who was among the first rock artists to fully take control of the studio process. They were the only artists ever to hit #1 on the charts with a surf-themed record, 1963's "Surf City", made one of the most ambitious concept albums ever in "Pop Symphony #1", and had a long run of hits in multiple styles from 1958-1966 before Berry was nearly killed in a car crash, essentially ending their career. The top eligible duo in rock not yet in.

Sun Apr 29 2012After Brian Wilson's Beach Men, Jan Berry and Dean Torrence were the unmistackable voice of the California Sound. Often overshawoded by Wilson's genius, J & D continued to put out a solid slew of top ten 45's though out the first half of the 1960s until the Beatles pushed many Amercian hitmakers to the side and personal tragedy struck the boys. . Jan & Dean actually were recording at the time of the Beach Boys inception and Jan Berry teamed up as Jan & Arnie with a sweet litty ditty entitled "Jennie Lee" (Torrence was ushered into the military reserves about the time of the recording and his name did not appear on the single nor his vocals). In the late 50's, Jan & Dean got theoir 1st taste of major success when they released the fun sing.a.long ode to toddlers called "Baby Talk" which predates anything beach related. . Also of note, the Jan & Dean single "Linda" was written about the future bride of Paul McCartney, Linda Eastman, heiress to the Eastman Kodak fortune her father foun... Read more

Tue Sep 07 2010You mean they're not in the hall already? Jan Berry was a genius almost as much as Brian Wilson and Dean Torrence kept the flame going when Jan's burned out. Often compared to the more popular surf band (as glad as I am for their induction, though one band member made his sense of entitlement well-known that night). May this horrendous oversight be rectified soon.
