Like Yes and Rush, Styx began primarily as a progressive rock band, but as the band reached the mid-70s, shortly after Tommy Shaw’s entrance, they went into a more accessible rock direction. This choice led to a wealth of classic rock radio staples that fill the airwaves to this day. Four multi-platinum albums in a row, “Grand Illusion”, “Pieces of Eight”, "Cornerstone” and “Paradise Theater” alone should earn the band’s induction into the Hall of Fame (three of them went triple platinum). Like Cheap Trick above, Styx has been stamped all over pop culture as well from TV shows like “Supernatural”, “Chuck”, The Simpsons”, “Family Guy” and “Futurama”. The NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers play the song “Renegade” when the team’s defense takes the field. Comic Adam Sandler uses their music throughout his film “Big Daddy”, referring to Styx as “the greatest American rock band.”

Styx was THE band of my formative years; they were on the radio when I was in elementary school and my older sisters got their first stereo. They bought "Paradise Theater" and "Kilroy Was Here" when those two albums came out. I can sing every word of every song on both those CDs today. My slightly older husband turned me on to the earlier stuff and we love to listen and talk about how those songs affected us. He tells me that "I'm OK" pulled him back from the brink of suicide. So some people hate Dennis DeYoung. He has incredible talent and a mind for theater, and helped with the formation of an entire new genre of Rock and Roll. Styx without DeYoung is just not really Styx, so to say he personally shouldn't be in is asinine. If Madonna, who never sang Rock and Roll, could be in HOF, Styx absolutely should. So some people took ABBA's music and turned it into a Broadway show. Dennis, make "Kilroy Was Here" what you wanted and put it on Broadway.

They have amazing talent and songs, they are the most deserving out of all of the bands who are not in the HoF. If Johnny Cash (a country artist), Bob Marley (Reggae), Jackson 5/Micheal Jackson (Pop), Prince (Pop) and Madonna (speaks for itself) are in it than Styx should have been inducted a long time ago.

Forgetting about the 'Babe" and "Mr. Roboto" (can we say boo Dennis DeYoung?), their music is forever relevant and rocking. The solid drumming of Todd Sucherman, the incredible bass players- Ricky Phillips and legendary Chuck Panozzo, the keyboard wizardry of Lawrence Gowan, the man-the myth- the guitar hero himself- James Young and last but not least- my favorite rock and roller- the musician's musician Tommy Shaw. I have seen them so many times in concert and they never disappoint! This is the band that needs to be in the rock and roll hall of fame.

A band that actually "worked" their way to rock superstardom. The very first band, from a lond list of artists such as say-the Beatles, Led Zepplin, etc, to have four consecutive triples platinum albums in a row, sell out Madison Square Garden 3 nights in a row, draw at leat 25,000 fans in a totally depressed market, be the closest thing to Beatle mania you'll ever see. Still recording studio albums for their FANS!!! Still playing 120 plus concerts every year all over the globe many of which are sell-outs. All over the country at any given hour a radio station is playing one of their songs. They support GREEN on their tours and even use bio-diesel in their buses, They give back such as giving thousands upon thousands of dollars to victems of Katrina and 9/11. Absolutely! They have been a juggernaut with a reputation for one of the best live shows since the 70's. The only shame is that there is a question about their entry. The people that are enraged are the pop listeners or metal heads that don't quite get it. Gowan can play the keyboard and sing his songs, but leave it to Dennis to sing the originals though.

Anyone who does not believe STYX should be in have not listened to anything but their radio hits. Suite Madame Blue from Equinox and Castle Walls from The Grand Illusion are pure genius. In defense of Roboto, Dennis DeYoung never meant for that song to be a single. An Exec at A&M made that call. The song was only meant to lay the foundation of the concept album.

Let 'em in after a heartfelt apology for Mr. Roboto. I've always loved their other songs.

One of the first to do a "stage show" versus a concert. Way ahead of their time back then, great talent, should be in all rock collections, great and unique band!

Personally, I don't know the reason why Styx hasn't made it into the HOF. I've been to see these guys in concert live three or four times over the years and if you ask me would I go again...damn straight I would! I was on the boards of the stage at one concert just inches from the tight vocals from Tommy Shaw. Not to mention hearing Lawrence Gowan sing and play piano. Couple that with being up close enough to see James Young's gnarly guitar licks...pure adrenaline rush.

The question is not: Does Styx deserve to be in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? For me, the answer to that question is: Absolutely! They saved us from hours of disco when The Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight were making it big. Not only that, this was one of those rare bands with 3 lead singers, 2 lead guitarists and a prog-rock influenced keyboardist. They could be philosophical with "Grand Illusion," "Suite Madame Blue," and "Fooling Yourself," tell stories with "Boat On The River," "Queen Of Spades"and "Renegade," romantic with "Babe" and "Lady," and satirical with "Put Me On," "Miss America" and "Great White Hope." "The real questions are: 1. Will they get in? They weren't a favorite among Rolling Stone, who basically runs (and sometimes runs over) the HoF. 2. If by some miracle, they were inducted, would the likes of Tommy Shaw, Chuck Pinozzo and JY Young bury the hatchett with Dennis DeYoung long enough to stand together to receive such an honor? Styx is an unusually talented band that offers top selling ballads outstanding rockers and a music portfolio that is simply impressive. The question is not if they should be admitted but when.

Styx has been deserving of a spot in the rock and roll hall of fame for a while to me. They were the very first band to ever sell four platinum records in a row. They've also had one of the most successful tours in rock history. The Grand Illusion. And the music is really really good!

There is a line between good and great, talented and legendary...Styx didn't quite make it over that line into HOF company, IMO.

These guys should already be in. NOT the freakshow they've become, either. Their classic lineup when most vocals were done by Dennis DeYoung and less Tommy Shaw. Your review made my day! *************************************************** *************************** GREAT muscianship, OUTSTANDING vocal performances, and just really talented songwriters. I refer to all albums done prior to Kilroy. Although Kilroy broke ground for it's time.... Their best songs tended to be album tracks, actually. In my mind, Melodic AOR with a progressive edge=Styx, and they were fantastic!

I have seent hem live 3 times, all be it not with the original line-up, but they do not belong in.They were an average rock band like most arena rock bands of the 70s.  See: Foreigner, Boston, Frampton etc.

I know there are bands with more talent, but I have always found these guys entertaining even when they were putting out cheesy stuff like Mr.Roboto.

Styx Stynks!

Styx was a Great band but with out Dennis they are a shadow of what they used to be. Let's not forget the Panzzo brothers. One of the best bands to come out of the 70's.

Wow, the band that gave us Mr. Roboto, being inducted.....  They are ok, but they probally won't be in there for quite awhile.

Although it is more cool to bash them now, and I do confess I wouldn't like to be caught listening to the likes of 'Mr Roboto' (as catchy as it may be). But they are a very talented and indeed unique band, and they are certainly worth listening to.All together now... "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto"

Oscargamblesfro - i dismiss prog rock lock stock and barrell because it is all bombastic and pretentious cr@p. Nothing to do with Rolling Stone or John Lydon telling me to. I don't know which I loathe more - UK proggers like Yes, ELP, early Genesis, Gentle Giant and Marillion - or the US AOR versions like Kansas and Styx. Styx in particular have a brand of dullness tinged with a cloyingness that makes me squirm. Vile in extremis

Styx represents much of what was wrong with overproduced, way-too-long, epic-wannabe songs of the 70's. . .

I contiue to be amazed by the utter ignorance of people who do not feel Styx belongs in the Hall of Fame.

"Grand Illusion" is a great concept album, which would classify them as prog rock, I suppose, even though I never thought of them in the same vein as Pink Floyd or Rush or Alan Parsons Project. I agree that some of their stuff was a bit pompous and trite, but overall I think their music rocked pretty hard. "Suite Madame Blue" is a great song, along with "Blue Collar Man".

If a group changes the way music is perceived, or introduces a new genre, or is even voted the most popular rock group of a year, or holds the record for 1st rock group to have 4 consecutive double platinum albums... should be in.

A great band. Lots of people will crap all over them because it's cool to do so nowadays. They wrote and performed great pop/rock songs. What the hell is wrong with that? Good, catchy songs. Not the most depth, but if everyone tries to be Bono the world will be a pretty crapy place (it's crappy enough with one Bono). Come Sail Away, Renegade, Lady, Too Much Time On My Hands, I could go on and on. Everyone needs to lighten the hell up and stop judging music based on whether or not they think they're friends will think it's acceptable.
