A versatile band that was able to excel as it transitioned from a west coast rock sound with a Moby Grape influence to jazz/rock sound that was unique brought on from Michael McDonald sytle and then back to its original roots. Two classic albums I see that the Doobie Brothers created. One from each era. First, 1973's "Captain and Me" with the signature hits of "China Grove" and "Long Train Runnin" along with a number of noteworthy tunes such as "Clear as the Driven Snow," and "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman." Second, from the Michael McDonald era, the grammy winning "Minute By Minute." Jeff Baxter's solo on "How Do the Fools Survive" makes that purchase a must buy. Simply fantastic. The Doobie Brothers lineup over the years has showcased excellent musicians as they have transitioned in and out of the band. These guys have got to be in.

One of the best AMERICAN Rock N Roll bands of the 70's. They had hits in the 70's and 80's, 2 #1 singles. Their greatest hits album has sold in excess of 10 million. They have won Grammys. They tour non-stop. They were successful with 2 distinctively different sounds. They have sold over 30 million albums in the US. This band is too big to ignore any longer. The question is, does Jann Wenner at Rolling Stone like them? Probably not, so they sit and wait.

Don't know of a band more deserving than the Doobie Brothers. South City Midnight Lady, China Grove, Eyes of Silver I love listening to this stuff now more than ever. Now, I didn't mind it when Jeff "The Skunk" Baxter came along for the ride, but I could have done without Michael McDonald. Hey Michael, pull back off the microphone man...for crying out loud it's not a record producer!

I don't know how well they got along with Rolling Stone, which unfortunately owns the Hall Of Fame but the Doobie Brothers definitely should be in. Classics include songs like "China Grove," a song about a street in downtown San Antonio, TX, Pat Simmons' "Black Water," Tom Johnston's "Listen To The Music," covers of "Jesus Is Just Alright" and "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)" and one of Michael McDonald's best songs "Takin' It To The Streets." Does anyone remember the sitcom What's Happening? They were special guests on a 2-part episode. I also laughed in a scene in Romancing The Stone when a guy cusses when the hero reads an old Rolling Stone and exclaims "$@%*^! The Doobie Brothers broke up! When did THAT happen?" Make that guy happy, Hall Of Fame, and give them their due soon!

Someone wrote this amazing piece....it's spot on!   "What can one say? The rock and roll music industry is now a concoction of underperformers playing simple chords and spewing idiotic lyrics that are incomprehensible. Every band that I have seen perform on the Late Night shows, well----they freakin' suck. They would be lucky to get high school gigs if they were playing in the 70s--THE DECADE OF TRUE ROCKERS!! Once in our lifetime, true music aficianados will get to experience a band like the Doobie Brothers. Nobody can compare to this assemblage of marquis talent--and I mean nobody--not Neil Young with his impetuous, whining voice--not Bob Dylan--with his constipated incomprehensible utterances--maybe the Stones and the Who--but the problem with them is that they are a bunch of prima donnas who think that they are god's gift to rock and roll. The Doobies are essentially America's rock band. Home grown with humble roots and an incredible sense of who they are as musicians--but more imp... Read more

There's no doubt they were popular enough, and I don't see any reason to exclude them as long as I don't have to listen to their boring records.

Two phases of the Doobies, early (Tom Johnston) and later (McDonald). Both good and successful.

Yes, I certainly think that their longevity and the quality of their songs should be considered. "China Grove" and "Takin'It to the Streets" stand out. One thing: "Listen to the Music" repeats its title way too many times. Listening to it in its entirety is never something I do voluntarily.

These guys should be in, even it means excluding Michael McDonald. I can't believe Lynyrd Skynyrd would go in but not the Doobie Brothers. Watch the concert from Wolf Trap in high def. with good sound and you'll be hooked - again.

They became critical whipping boys for what they evolved into in the last half of their career as a top 40 recording act and deservedly so.  By the end of their run they were a pretty watered down  version of a very good band.  But I don't think they  were a hall of fame band compared to contemporaries like the Allmans, Skynyrd, or even Bad Company or the Faces.

I can't believe that Lynrd Skynrd has been inducted before the Doobies. They did some good music but The Doobies have better tunes and should have been inducted years ago so, what's your problem RRHF? Listen To The Music people!!!!UPDATE:  The RRHF is run by a bunch of out of touch people who apparently haven't had their butts kissed enough times by the band and they never will. The Doobies have too much class to do that. An example of their lack of insight came up again in 2007 when they inducted Grand Master Flash (a rap group) into the hall over The Dave Clark Five (a true rock group) who received more votes than the former. Their excuse was that they had not inducted any rap group and they thought it was time. What a crock!! Hello, rap is NOT rock (much less music)!!!  My justification for being angry is further verified by the fact(s) that the following have been overlooked along with The Doobs (someone please explain to me why):  The Dave Clark Five, Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, Che... What I'd like to know is, did the Doobs know what they were going to become when they hired Michael McDonald?  What went on behind the scenes?  I bet it's a fascinating tale.

The Doobs were indeed a Hybrid band with the combination of Rock, Jazz, Hard Rock, and a little Southern Rock thrown in for good measure. The uniqueness of the band is in its diversity and combination of the musical influences of the individual members. As the band's sounds evolved, did we not evolve and change with them? No band in the recent bands inducted into the RRHOF is any different in its makeup. All bands are the result of their influences. No matter how many times critics say " This band is an original."

Diverse biker-band that has proven themselves many times over. Still playing great to this day. Many other groups that have gotten into the RRHOF hadn't even come close to the compared record sales or sold-out tours this band had. They should have been in a long time ago....

Hey look, another band that was great in the '70s and not so good in the '80s! Doobies, Heart, Chicago... I'm starting to see a pattern. "Black Water," "Long Train Runnin" and "Listen to the Music" are enough to make them worthy.

I First Saw them in Fall 1972, when I had gone to see Jackson Browne and some other "Featured Guest"! The rest they say is "Musical History"!! I saw them in New Orleans in 1976 when Skunk & Michael had joined & before Tommy got sick. ALong with the Memphis Horns, I will have to say that was one of the greatest shows I had ever seen!! I saw them twice in 1980-81 when Pat was the only "Original" member. I last saw them in New Orleans when Mike joined them onstage when they followed Alan Touissant. In My own Humble Opinion The Doobie Brothers and the Eagles are without a doubt the Beatles and the Rolling Stones of American Rock & Roll. It is Sacrelige they have not been Inducted as of yet!!!

I have just about every one of their CDs, from both the Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald eras. Whether it's the hard-driving "China Grove" or the jazzy "Takin' To The Streets," the band is first-rate. Despite their well-deserved success, they deserve more support from the critics and the music industry and should, for all intents and purposes, be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There a lot of less deserving bands and musicians that have made it. Unlike them, the Doobie Brothers has actually earned its way.

Boring beyond belief. There are only two things in their favor: 1.The episode of What's Happening? that they appeared on. Unintentional comedy factor is through the roof. 2. The fact that they were discovered by Skip Spence of Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane fame. While that's actually a demerit for Spence, on his worst day, he was 10,000 times better than these corporate rockers.

Why isn't this band inducted already? Brilliant musicians with amazing diversity in material and an outstanding trio of lead singers in Johnston/Simmons/McDonald. Name another band who can boast 3 leads of this quality. This band has stood the test of time and is deserving of induction.

A tremendous group who were around for many years. I actually liked their later stuff better, when Michael McDonald was their lead singer. I think most folks like their earlier stuff better. Nonetheless, they were one of the most influential groups of the 70's and 80's and most certainly deserve to get in.

To the guy who said they were a singles band, I offer this nugget: their first hit album was on the charts for 119 weeks (Toulouse St.), their second big album was on the charts for 102 weeks (The Captain and Me), and their 1977 release Livin' On The Fault Line went gold and was a top ten album without spawning a hit single that reached higher than #48. Additionally, Minute by Minute was #1 for 5 consecutive weeks in 1979 and earned 4 grammies in total. On the same token, it was not music for white suburbanites unless you only view the Michael McDonald era (and even then, some of those songs were in the top 100 of the then-existent black charts for Billboard), and the range of music they played was wide enough to cater all the way from Country to Smooth jazz, with hard rock in the middle. In any case, they are more than worthy of entrance in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, especially considering some of the bands who have earlier gained admittance.
