It's a big deal because the right wing of the GOP is making it a big deal. All McCain really said was that he wouldn't take anything off the table in the event of a financial crisis. The problem is that there are those in the extreme right who believe that raising taxes can never benefit an economy, and they want him to drink the same Kool-Aid George Bush, Sr. made in the 1992 campaign.
