After seeing what happened to Kerry on this issue, no way was McCain going to buck the religious right on this one. Still, McCain the maverick has died completely, at least for the duration of the campaign. His problem is that people are pretty good at picking up on deception, and he can't be both a centrist and a religious right apologist. Thing is, the politics on this issue may be turning around.
