This fat, middle aged, hard-drinking, two fisted private detective is the single greatest thing to happen to crime fiction.

There have been better characters that followed him (Chandler's Marlowe, McDonalds Archer, Burke's Robicheaux) but he was the first great breakthrough in showing a genre that it could be literature.
